Day 50

Back on Easter Day, I shocked the church neighbours, and congregation by hanging out the washing on the church lawn. It was in fact an art installation – On the 8th Day – using the no longer needed grave wrappings. If you missed it I blogged about it here.

On Ascension it was taken down. However the strips without a letter on have now been made into prayer flags for Pentecost. I had grand ideas to begin with but time, or lack of it, meant it became a task involving fabric paint and stylised flames in red, yellow and copper rather than orange. Jesus died and rose again not to come back and do the work for us but rather to empower us to do work in his name. The flags are reminders that the work isn’t over. Reminders that we need to take up the promise of the Holy Spirit and let her in to do her stuff. Reminders that we still, and always will, need to pray. Prayer helps calm our fears and guide our path.

The prayer flags hung over the altar filling a basket on the floor, from which people were invited to take one or more home with them. They also hung from the Paschal candle (yes the candle is lit, it is moved but other than the Sunday after Ascension is lit every week) where they will remain for the time being. The ones on the altar were just for today.
