This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.
This verse always reminds me of my father.
He always used a plumb line to hang the first piece of wallpaper to ensure that the finished result was that of straight wallpaper regardless of how out of square the corners might be. He would use the phrase: ‘ The paper is hanging true.’ regardless of how skew it looked at against a strangely angled wall.
For this reason and this reason alone I can’t help – when I hear this verse – thinking of us as the wallpaper on that wall, and that unless we are hung straight with the plumb line that God holds the world will look upon us and think we are not true. A plumb line is used because our eyes can deceive us and make us think something is hanging straight when in fact it isn’t. We need to ensure that we constantly keep referring back to God’s plumb line so that when the world looks at us they see something true not something out of line with the love of God.
