Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’
Why Mary didn’t recognise Jesus we may never know, however we are all familiar with her condition. At times each of us fails to recognise Christ in another person. We forget that Christ dwells within the gardener or dustmen, the lawyer or banker, the nurse or stranger in the street. Maybe you think surely Mary would have recognised Jesus, even if her tears were so great that her vision was blurred she would have known his voice.
Well maybe that is what God thinks each time we treat someone as if they are not worthy of our attention, not worthy of our respect, not worthy of our time, not worth listening to, talking to, spending time with. When we look at others and think they are not like us – made in God’s image.
