Today is commonly known as Low Sunday. After the high of last Sunday’s festival today is more muted, yet this is 50 days of Unremitting Joy so we have no lows, we had 40 days of them before Easter Day, now we will rejoice for 50. So for today’s picture I leave the Biblical account and turn to the Paschal Candle, lit from fires and in great ceremony last week. The Paschal Candle which symbolises that Christ is here among us. The Paschal Candle which will burn until Jesus ascends into heaven and then will be relit for baptisms, funerals and to welcome Christ’s birth. The Paschal Candle which reminds us that Christ is indeed risen, death has indeed lost its sting, not just for a day or a season, not just for one individual, but for all and for eternity.
At the Easter Vigil these words were spoken:
May the Light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds.
