Edinburgh Feet – the second

The Rest on the Flight into Egypt is a painting by Paris Bordon (1500-1571) don’t let the name confuse you he was Italian.

The Rest on the Flight into EgyptAs Joseph leads the donkey to water and John the Baptist greets Jesus and enchants my daughter, Mary reclines and I find myself honing in on her foot, actually hers was the first foot that caught my eye.

Mary's SandalDelicate gold thread work gently caressing her foot. Rich looking and elaborate the foot clean, no callouses or scrapes.  Is this really the foot of a refugee?

It isn’t really even a sandal, for even riding on a donkey it is hard to imagine it staying on.   It isn’t traveling footwear for it offers no support or protection.  It isn’t the property of a poor provincial girl.  It reminded me of henna work, its swirls, its dots, its sweeps, but rather than an earthy red it is the brightness of gold.
