St Nicholas of Myra

St Nicholas of Myra the Patron Saint of:- Bakers, Brewers, Brides, Children, Greece, Grooms, Merchants, Pawnbrokers and Travelers.  It is not for any of these reasons he is one of four saints on this splendid altar frontal at St Bride’s, but due to the fact he is Patron Saint of Russian, as you can see the imperial eagle is above him.  The altar frontal acknowledges the collaboration between the Russians, the Irish, the French and the Scots during the first World War.  On the frontal the corresponding saints are St Brigid of Kildare, St Denis of France and St Margaret of Scotland; not maybe the ones who first come to mind when thinking of these countries but for me that makes there choice all the richer.
