St Denis of France

Denis is such a great name for a saint.  There are the Johns and Peters and Paul and Marys and somehow we – well I do at least – expect saints to have such biblical, or if not biblical resoundingly Christian names.   Denis comes from the Latin Dionysos referring to the Greek god of wine, it just gets better and better.  A saint of God, named after another god, who happens to be seen as a god of wine, and to boot it is a pretty ordinary name.  St Denis I think proclaims there is hope for sainthood in anyone!

St Denis is patron saint of France and Paris in particular.
