War and Peace

In the Daily Sketch on Saturday September 13th 1916, the following picture was published, it isn’t a good reproduction I know, but it is a photograph of a newspaper that is nearly 100 years old.

WWI gun crossesUnderneath the picture was the report that an unidentified officer had made these crosses out of the guns, and in memory of his men who had died on that field.  Apparently it was done in the hope that all those who saw the crosses would know peace even amidst the horrors of war.
