Supper With A New Slant

This picture of The Last Supper by Pieter Coecke Van Aelst is rather curious and makes me smile.

If you look at the disciples round the table you will see that they are all far older than is usually portrayed, several have receding foreheads and one is almost completely bald. Their clothes are also far more dishevelled than usually portrayed too; as for the one sitting at the end on the left he looks totally bored. Jesus, although also different, is not old like the others and it would appear he is still telling James and John (the brothers) that it is not up to him who sits on his right and left, while Judus money bag in hand, although half hidden, would appear to be saying ‘Who me?’
