Last night we went to see Miss Potter.
Now I didn’t really know what to expect, but what I got was a charming, enjoyable, touching, at times amusing, but tragic film, which was wonderfully directed. The use of CGI was clever and fitting and never over done.
Renee Zellweger as Beatrix Potter showed yet again she has a talent for portraying English women of a certain type, and there are a lot of similarities between this role and one of her most well that of Bridget Jones. As Beatrix Potter she depicts a woman who refuses to be constrained by the straitjacket of social conventions and strikes her own path, despite her shyness and domineering mother – played wonderfully by Barbara Flynn. Ewan McGregor, plays Norman Warne, her publisher without whom we might never have heard of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle Duck or Mrs Tiggywinkle, together they set out to prove his brothers and her parents wrong and produce a book which soon woos London and beyond. Bill Paterson as Beatrix’s father and Emily Watson as Norman’s sister both add richness to a story which basically is about relationships, between people and also in some cases between imaginary friends.
If you want to go and see something that wont tax the brain and don’t object to costume dramas then Miss Potter is worth going to see.
