All that remains of York Castle is Clifford Tower – which is in fact a keep not a tower – and which gets its name from a rather gruesome event.

Roger de Clifford, came to his end there in 1322, having been convicted and found guilty of treason. He was hung from the tower, which hardly seems reason to name it after him; after all he wouldn’t have been the only one to die in such a manner. However the story doesn’t end there – to teach others a lesson and make sure they didn’t have any similar ideas, the body was left there for the carrion to feast on. It is said it remained for at least a year!
