After marvelling, coveting and playing with ‘B’s’ remote controlled vacuum cleaner we finally got down to discussing this months book at the Book Group.
The Return had been chosen due to the fact Victoria Hislop’s first book, The Island, had been the people who attends type of book. This latest book from her is in fact very similar to ‘The Island’ but this time it is Spain during the Civil War which is the backdrop for the majority of the book. If like most of us you too have very little knowledge of that part of Spain’s history then it is a wonderfully book for giving an over view of a time which up until very recently Spain itself had tried to wipe from it’s history.
Victoria certainly seems to have a gift for making the scenes she is describing come to life, the horrors of war, the passion of the flamenco, the power of the bull fight, the fear of flight are all brought stunningly to life by her descriptive prowess. I enjoyed ‘The Return’ more than ‘The Island’ I found it less sentimental and more earthy, one member of the group enjoyed it less, the rest felt it was just as good.
