Yesterday morning the alarm went off at 2am, no it wasn’t some kind of an error it was deliberate, after all when you work on a Sunday morning it makes more sense to go to bed early on a Saturday night and set the alarm for 2am than stay up till 5am and then try and get up in the morning after a couple of hours sleep.
The reason for the alarm call is obvious to those in the know, the new F1 season has begun, and the first race was in Australia so while for some the sensible thing might have been to record the race, or watch the re-run or highlights, for us the natural thing was to set the alarm and watch it in bed.
It is going to take a bit of getting used to the changes of drivers and car colours, and the Australian Grand Prix is rarely an indication of how the rest of the season will progress, but it looks like we could be in for some excitement this year. Kimmi drove a fine race and took the chequered flag well in front, but then I would have been astounded if he hadn’t done after all he is now driving for Ferrari and as Massa proved - climbing from a grid position of 22nd to end up 6th - a good car beneath you can make all the difference. I have always thought Kimmi was a good driver now with the reliability of Ferrari behind him he will have the opportunity to prove it and I for one will not be surprised if he walks off with the championship.
DC managed, yet again, to make a risky overtaking move not pay off and crashed out in spectacular style, while Jason seemed embarrassed about his performance when interviewed after the race. Maybe the reason behind these two actions has something to do with Lewis Hamilton, having stepped up to F1 to be the second driver for Williams (Alonso having moved over to them from Renault). The thing is I don’t think anyone told him; he was a rookie and was supposed to be overawed by it all and be grateful just to finish the 58 laps of his first race. Or if they did he chose to ignore that advice, instead driving a race of courage and determination foregoing his lack of experience in F1 and ended up claiming the final place on the podium, after spending much of it in 2nd place and a couple of laps leading the pack!
Roll on Easter Sunday and Malaysia.
